CENSUS RETURNS

Clitheroe Library has census returns for most of the Ribble Valley Borough area for the years;

1841 to 1891 on micro fiche

There are surname indexes available for the 1851 and 1871 censuses

MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS

The Ribble Valley branch of the Lancashire Family History and Heraldry Society (LFHHS) has transcribed many of the Ribble Valley churchyards and the Clitheroe 'municipal Cemetery. The M.I.s are indexed by name and place and contain a plan of the churchyard and are an invaluable resource.

MAPS

Clitheroe Library has all the first edition 6" to the mile Ordnance Survey maps, which were published in the early 1840s and all the first edition OS .25" to the mile maps published in the 1890s for the Ribble Valley Borough. The library also has many other early maps including some tithe maps.

CRAVEN WILLS

Brian Stott of the LFHHS has indexed the wills from the Craven area which are held in the Borthwick Institute in York. If you find a name on the index, photocopies of the wills can be obtained from the Borthwick Institute.

NEWSPAPERS

The library has the "Clitheroe Advertiser & Times" from December 1888 to the present time and "The Clitheroe Borough Record" from 1926 to 1962 on microfilm.

TRADE DIRECTORIES

The library has original and photocopied trade directories from the 1800s to the 1950s. If your ancestors had trades or professions, they can often be found in the trade directories.
